The Queen's Gambit is a seven part drama based on the book the queens gambit. We follow Beth Harmons life from a child to a young adult and her relationship with chess and addiction. The show starts in the 1950's and carry's on during Beth's life. The show is brilliant and entertaining. However, despite how brilliant the show is I could count on one hand how many times Beth lost a chess match. The first game she loses is halfway through the series and to a master chess player. Another criticism that I have with this show is that despite the show being set in the 60's Beth receives very little sexism. I think they dealt with her addiction to pills and alcohol well (despite their negative effects only catching up to her near the end), so I believe they could have handled that topic. The only sexism she seems to receives is comments on her being a female chess player and how nicely she dresses. Overall I though this show was fabulous. It felt surreal and realistic at the same time and really made me want to play chess. It's been very popular lately and for good reason. I'd highly recommend.
